Leaders for Ethics, Animals, and the Planet (LEAP)

Goatlandia is proud to be one of the Northern California sanctuaries in partnership with LEAP and are thrilled to welcome a new class of LEAPers for the upcoming 23-24 session.

LEAP is a revolutionary humane education program providing high school students across the nation with a compassionate alternative to traditional agriculture programs like 4H and FFA. A comprehensive four-year program taught by participating farm animal sanctuaries, LEAP combines interactive curriculum modules with hands-on learning activities, leadership training, and real-world skill development. LEAP aims to prepare the next generation of changemakers to tackle the challenges of animal cruelty, climate change, food deserts, and habitat loss, and encourages them to devise solutions for a more compassionate, sustainable food system. For more info on the LEAP program, visit leapforanimals.org

GOOD NEWS! We have extend the application window through September 30th, with applicant approval by October 4th.

During the second semester (starting in January) students will be presented with the option to complete an independent project. The projects will be done remotely (no extra time is needed at the sanctuary) and will focus on a central theme regarding animal rights/welfare, climate change, wildlife preservation, the food system, leaders throughout history in these areas, etc.  This year's theme will be: New Frontiers: People, Ideas, and Innovations.

If students choose to participate they will complete a project in one of the following areas:

  • Short documentary

  • Paper

  • Website

Similar to the National History Day projects, these will include research using both primary and secondary sources, analysis, and a clear communication of the theme through consistent student voice. Guidelines, rubrics, and requirements will be available to students starting in January as well additional resources found on the LEAP website.

Projects will be due in late May and reviewed by a panel of LEAP-selected judges. Scholarships awarded may be in the range of $500 - $1000 with the higher prizes available to students who have been in the program longer.
